100 Years of TMS International

1926 – Tube City Iron & Metal (“Tube City”) is established in 1926 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania by Lithuanian immigrant David Coslov as a scrap metal company.
1928 – Tube City moves to Glassport, Pennsylvania.
1936 – Hugh Nelson and Jack Kaiser form Kaiser-Nelson, a sand and gravel business and the predecessor to International Mill Service, near Cleveland, Ohio. Expanded internationally to offer services in slag processing and metal recovery business.
1946 – Brown Bros. Contractors, Incl, was founded when two brothers, Hank and Byron Brown obtained a contract to process slat and to recover metallics at Luken Steel.
1954 – Leon Coslov, David’s son, becomes President of Tube City.
1960s – IMS signs additional international contracts with company in Brazil and Canada.
1960 – IU International acquires Brown Bros. and John M. Seabrook because its first president.
1964 – Brown Bros. acquires Kaiser-Nelson.
1965 – Bob Wolcott succeeds John Seabrook as President of IMS.
1969 – U.S. operations of Brown Bros. and Kaiser-Nelson were incorporated under the name of International Mill Service.
1962 – Kaiser-Nelson became a public corporation.
1964 – Michael Coslov joins Tube City.
1964 – IMS signs its first international contract with SIDOR, the largest steel mill in Venezuela.
1969 – Kaiser-Nelson incorporates under the name International Mill Service, Inc. (“IMS”).
1970 – Jack Bayer succeeds Bob Wolcott at as President of IMS.
1972 – IMS acquires Ferro Processing Corp.
1974 – IMS acquires Foseco-Lycrete in the United Kingdom. IMS Lycrete, based in London, was formed to service mils in the U.K., France, Belgium, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Luxembourg, Egypt. Latin American operations were established in Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, and Chile.
1979 – IMS acquires Sodynad, S.A.R.L
1981 – IMS acquires Clarence A. Hackett, Inc.
1983 – Joseph Curtin joins Tube City.
1984 – IMS acquires Reclaimed Metals Corp, McGraw Construction Co.
1985 – IMS acquires majority interest in Somafer, a French firm with operations in the steel and utility industries throughout Europe.
1987 – Tube City acquired by David’s grandson, I Michael Coslov and renamed Tube City, LLC.
1989 – Raymond Kalouche joins IMS.
1995 – Tube City forms Olympic Mill Services in Glassport, PA.
1999 - IMS purchases the U.S. operations of Alexander Mill Operations.
2001 – Tube City Commences operations in Slovakia, including scrap agency service and GenBlend+ scrap optimization.
2003 – Blue Point Capital Partners acquires majority interest in Tube City.
2004 – Wellspring Capital Management, LLC first acquires IMS (October) and then acquires a majority interest in Tube City from Blue Point Capital (December). Tube City IMS (TCIMS) formed in December with the combination of Tube City and IMS under parent holding company Tube City IMS Corporation, to form the largest outsource provider of products and services to the steel industry in North America, with an expanding presence worldwide.
2004 – TCIMS acquires Auximetal in France.
2004-2006 – The company continues to expand its relationships with steel mills in North America through cross selling of services and development of relationships with new customers.
2006 – TCIMS opens representative office in Beijing, China. Four additional Asian offices follow in subsequent years (Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Taiwan).
2006 – Acquisition of service locations in France.
2007 – Onex Corporation acquires majority ownership in TCIMS from Blue Spring Capital.
2007 – Service operations begin in Belgium
2007 – International expansion into new markets continues, growing a significant footprint outside the United States and Canada.
2008 – TCIMS commences operations in Gent, Belgium and in Mexico.
2008 – TCIMS acquires Hanson Resource Management Limited and its subsidiary Hanson Support Services Limited in Scunthorpe, England.
2008 – TCIMS startup of operations in Mexico and Trinidad.
2009 – TCIMS opens representative trading office in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
2009 – I Michael Coslov, Chairman and CEO, retires from TCIMS after more than 48 years with the Company. .
2009 – Joseph Curtin named to the Board, as well as President and CEO of TCIMS.
2009 – TCIMS opens a trading office in Taiwan.
2011 – Company Announces Closing of IPO and begins trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
2011 – Joseph Curtin named Chairman of the Board of Directors.
2011 – TCIMS Company commences operations in Abu Dhabi, UAE and South Africa.
2012 – Raymond Kalouche named President and CEO of TMS upon the retirement of Joe Curtin
2012 – TCIMS opens trading office in Dubai, UAE. Completes expansion of scrap yard operation in Taichung, Taiwan.
2012 – Company marks one-year anniversary as a publicly traded company by ringing the opening bell on the New York Stock Exchange.
2012 – Commencement of trading activities in Latin America.
2013 – TMS is purchased and taken private by The Pritzker Organization and DNS Capital of Chicago.
2013 – Company enters into service contract in Poland, a joint venture partnership in Malayasia and trading activities in the U.K.
2014 – Company enters into new initiatives using 80/20 principles to achieve operational efficiencies.
2015 – TMS develops several proprietary technologies.
2015 – Services commence in Namibia, realignment of agency strategies and development of Innovative Cutting Technology and Extruded Product Services.
2016 – TMS acquires Shasta in Aliquippa, PA, a provider of grinding and machining services to producers of titanium, nickel and other high value metals.
2016 – Tube City IMS Corporation officially changed its corporate name to TMS International Corporation. The name was changed to reflect the company’s growing global presence and growth.
2019 – Company moves its corporate office from Glassport to City of Pittsburgh, South Side Works.
2020 – Company completes acquisition of Stein of Cleveland, Ohio, expanding its profile of domestic service contracts.
2021 – Company acquires Kent Environmental of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, an environmental service providers, largely for customers within the chemical and petrochemical space.
2023 – Company partners with Nippon Carbon as exclusive distributor of graphite electrodes.
2025 – Joel Hawthorne named new President and CEO after Raymond Kalouche retires to become Chairman of the Board of Directors
2026 - TMS realigns the Company into three dynamic business segments: Performance Materials Group, Industrial Mill Services Group and Specialty Services Group. Mark Whalen serves as President of the IMSG Group; David Aronson is President and COO of the PMG Group; Rich Santello is President of the Specialty Services Group, and Mike Costa supports the business groups as Executive Vice President of Global Marketing and Operations Support, which includes Fleet Management and Procurement.
Present Day – TMS International is the largest provider of outsourced industrial services to steel mills in North America. The company provides mill services at more than 69 customer sites in nine countries and its global raw material procurement network spans five continents. TMS three regional administrative offices are located in: Hammond, IN, Horsham, PA and Pittsburgh, PA.
